"Seattle, WA— OKOK Gallery proudly welcomes arts collective Environmental Aesthetics as it presents three site-specific sound compositions from its inaugural Satsop Residency Program.
In 2006 Environmental Aesthetics founders Gabe Bacon and Paul Schrag were granted access to Satsop Development Park, which operates on the site of a would-be nuclear power facility in Elma, Wa. In the late 1970s, Satsop was a component of the largest nuclear power plant construction project in U.S. history. The project comprised plans for five nuclear power reactors to be built in Hanford, and Elma WA, located 25 miles west of the state capitol. The project was cancelled after the budget swelled into the billions and nuclear energy fell out of favor with the general public. At the time of the cancellation, construction of the Satsop site was near completion.
Today, massive remnants of the project remain, including Cooling Tower No. 5, which was selected as the site of the Environmental Aesthetics residency program. The concrete tower rests beside the Chehalis River, rising nearly 500 feet in the air, its 15-foot-thick concrete wall encircling four acres of grass covered soil. To date, the structure has remained gated and largely unused. The Satsop Residency aims to reinterpret this epic monument as a sublime environment with the potential to function as an all encompassing artistic medium, emphasizing the interplay between site-specific sonic art, seemingly obsolete industrial architecture and the natural environment.
The three artists awarded the first annual Satsop Residency include: Seattle artist Yann Novak, Olympia artist Myello, and Olympia quartet Problems. In September 2007, the artists were invited interpret the tower sonically. The artists used on-site recordings to produce sound compositions representative of their individual responses to the tower’s form and acoustic qualities. These compositions and an accompanying sculptural installation will be presented at Ballard’s OKOK Gallery.
About Environmental Aesthetics:
Environmental Aesthetics was established in 2005 by Gabriel Bacon and Paul Schrag. The organization aims to foster the reinterpretation and re-contextualization of particular human and natural environments by initiating shifts in accepted historical and conventional classifications.
About The Artists:
Yann Novak is a Seattle based sound artist and founder of Dragon’s Eye Recordings. Novak uses field recordings and digital manipulation to produce compositions. These works offer Novak’s interpretation of the emotional effect of specific physical environments and emphasize the expressive nature of time and place.
Problems is an Olympia based group composed of Ian Ackerman, Joe Kuta, Warren Lee and Gabe Will. Through sound, the group actively collaborates and engages with the specific interiors in which their compositions take form. Focusing on sustained tones and the phantom melodies that arise within them, they expose microstructures and rich polyforms found within sustained pitch.
Myello is Olympia based composer Daniel Farrell. Farrell identifies his works as non-narrative associative sound poems, which are strongly informed by Surrealist philosophies and compositional strategies. Using significant and familiar sounds, and digital manipulation, Farrell’s compositions aspire to invoke the ecstatic nature of the human spirit against the backdrop of what he describes as the technological totality."
Happy Solstice. Peace. d.

an event you might be interested in attending.
"While in transit between distant galaxies and parallel universes, travelers often spend an evening at Lounge Mélange. Tea and coffee are served. Games both traditional and new are played. Musicians from the future perform rhythmic and melodic collages, and visitors are free to listen & dance, or to just relax and enjoy conversation with each other. Since you will be passing through our universe soon, why not stop by Lounge Mélange and enjoy an evening with us?".
I have the pleasure of performing with Timezone LaFontaine, Psychic Houses, and Nervous.

ugh. i am sick. however, as of october 11th my first label sanctioned album is availible for sale! $7 for the entire recording or $1 a piece for tracks. kudos to ben, andrew and all at aphonia. there will be a label showcase at Gallery 1412, loated at 1412 18th Ave (18th Ave and Union St) in seattle, this friday the 26th. i will be performing a short set alongside Amy Denio, KRGA, Derek M. Johnson, as well as a collaboration between ben robertson + andrew senna.
work on the Environmental Aesthetics project "amour fou in totalitarian technology" has ceased. finally... the final mix has yet to go off in the post, but probably tomorrow. it is 52 minutes long, loosely organized into 5 sections. spacious ambience, but disonant, with a short attention span... there are no firm plans for a gallery exhibit, or release as yet, but i will keep you posted as i get word from EA. i plan to work with some elements from the source recordings in the future and will make hose availible as per my agreements with EA. by the way, bob schwenkler from bicycle records made the acoustic recording inside the cooling tower with great proficiency, and took some lovely pictures of me performing. he also shared his dehydrated fruit with us. a engineer of genius and lovely person to boot.
time for bed, cheers. d

"composites and variations on forms" is finished. i posted off the AIFF files to aphonia rcordings last week and am waiting to get word that all can proceed. hopefully it will be in their on-line shop within a couple of weeks! i am at the moment working on an hour long, atmospheric composition for an artisit residency concieved and currated by Environmental Aesthetics. the working title for this project is, "amour fou in the totalitarian technology" and is based on improvisations recorded inside the, never completed, nuclear facility cooling tower at the Satsop development Park, outside of Elma Washington. the composition is in the late stage and close to completion. EA will shortly have a web site to and there will be more in depth information at that time.
dj phuqthenup had his laptop nicked in europe so fukdup records is delayed. i played a live late moring set for Chickenhed at Earthdance, outside of Castle Rock WA, but had technical problems and lost the recording. i am working at my new job a lot and am trying to catch up on rest. all the best. d

after much adversity, stress, celebration, wonder and a little personal tragedy, there is finally some evidence that i have been doing some work. i am pleased to announce that the album, "Composites and Variations on Forms" is in the final production stages. i am very pleased with how the work is turning out and i hope you, dear listener, will too be pleased. you can download/stream mp3's of selections from the album here along with other misc sound works. the album will (knock on wood) be released in a digital form on aphonia recordings some time next month. formative plans for limited edition hard copies are in the works, but i need to come up with the funds for quality cd manufacture first!?!
anyway, there will continue to be variations on this material posted in the coming months. thank you.

There is a better organized and more complete index of existing myello recordings available as of now, on the music page, with more to come soon.
The birth of aphonia records, a seattle based web label will see the first official myello release. Production for this, as yet untitled work, should be completed in the next month or so.
Also, work has begun on the, until now, rumored split remix 12" with Desolation Wilderness on the infamous dj phuqthemup's as-yet-un-named portland based label.
Thank you for your interest.
